50 States is the best band ever!
They are the best! The best band ever! They have the best songs! The bestest band I ever heard, bar none! They are great, and they are nice! Songs - just the titles are awesome! "That Was a Close Shave", "When I Was Five", "Trainwreck"- What great song titles! The best song title has to be "Swank". I think so, don't you? Maybe "1962" is better: I can't decide! They are all so great!
They have great song titles, but that is just the beginning! Yes, the songs are great too! "1962" is a great story about wrecking rock and roll, and it's true! "Legal Pad" puts co-habitation on the map: progressive social politics, progressive band. "Pinwheel" - a desparate post-punk individual lost in the desolate wilderness of a reality he never made! " "Boys from Britain" - The British kick ass! and of course "Sackfull of Sorry" - I don't know what that is about, but I'm sure it's great!
They looked cool! They had nice clothes, some from the GAP or Banana Republic, and underwear from Target: they were cool before Target was cool! They didn't wear any kind of uniform: they were themselves in practice and on stage. WOW! Who knew you could get away with that in the 90's.
They recorded just about EVERYTHING. All of the tapes show the constant determination to get the sound DOWN. That 50 States Sound - WOW! Move over, The Strokes, make way Dungen, the 50 States had that loud but sensitive, rockin' but relaxed sound down WAAAAY before anybody. The only thing better than the tapes is the live show.
Live they are the best. Tight, they can tell you a thing or two about tight. What rocking sets they have! They usually open with "Over" which sets the stage for blowing the crowd away! All kinds of different songs: "Shake My Hand" - A Rocker! "Hate Everything" - a cathartic Rocker! "Turn Off the Sun" - A love song, but a Rocker! "Geography" - a new kind of Rocker, one that has a new, bold sound: but still a Rocker! "Little Vacation" A Brazillian song! How neat!
I could go on, maybe tomorrow. For now, remember: 50 States is the best!

I agree that 50 States was great. I liked the song Pinwheel and also Over and Making Friends with My Pets.
Although, Honigman was also a great band, and had a great style.
It is hard to choose...
50 States was great, but Little Vacation was a Lucky Dog song. Lucky Dog was a great band too, if somewhat mysterious.
Whatever happened to LSDave? A Mpls band from the late 80s?
